At the Hearing Excellence Clinic, we strive to deliver empathetic, personalized care, particularly to children with special needs. This case study recounts our journey with a spirited 3-year-old toddler named Oliver, who lives with a physical disability and was brought to our clinic for a comprehensive hearing test conducted by our experienced audiologist, Hanine. 

Patient Profile 

Oliver, known for his love of toys and his charming smile, had been diagnosed with a physical disability early in life. His parents had concerns about his response to sounds, thus bringing him to our clinic for a thorough hearing assessment. 

The Journey 

Understanding Oliver’s unique needs, Hanine utilized her experience to formulate an assessment plan that would be comfortable yet thorough for the toddler. Throughout the process, she ensured Oliver and his parents felt included and reassured. 

The Assessment Process 

First, an Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) test was conducted. This non-invasive method assesses the function of the inner ear, focusing primarily on the cochlea, giving Hanine’s important insights into Oliver’s hearing health. 

Next, a Tympanometry (Tymp) test was performed. This procedure evaluates the condition of the middle ear, eardrum, and ossicles, providing further understanding of Oliver’s hearing capabilities. 

Finally, Hanine conducted the Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) test in a soundfield setting. Oliver was tasked with identifying different sounds, and each correct response was met with a visual reward. This interactive nature of the VRA test was especially helpful for Oliver, keeping him engaged and comfortable throughout the process. 

Outcomes 

Using a combination of OAE, Tymp, and VRA tests, Hanine was able to gather a comprehensive picture of Oliver’s auditory health. The results showed that Oliver had mild-to-moderate hearing loss. 

This diagnosis allowed for immediate intervention. Hanine developed a customized care plan, including fitting Oliver with appropriate hearing aids, counseling his parents about creating an acoustically beneficial environment at home, and scheduling regular follow-up appointments for monitoring his progress.
