Hearing Aid Repair | Hearing Aid Care Toronto – Hearing Excellence

Hearing aids are manufactured with tiny electronic components and complex circuitry. As with other electronic device, it is important to treat your hearing device with care in order to keep it in working order for many years and minimize potential problems during everyday use. Hearing devices may be sturdy, but like other electronic devices they cannot withstand improper use.  In addition parts reside inside an ear canal that exposes the hearing aid to moisture and ear wax and will require proper cleaning and care to extend it’s life.

Moisture damage

Protect your hearing devices from moisture

Like any other type of electronic device, you should keep your hearing aid away from high humidity or from getting wet. Do not wear them while in a sauna, showering, bathing, or swimming. Protect your hearing aids from rain, as well.   We recommend removing the battery from the device at night and leaving the battery compartment open. Additionally, a few different manufacturers offer a dehumidifier case that can help to dry your hearing aids overnight.  If you are interested in a dehumidifier our clinics have this available to buy.

Dirty Hearing Aids

Protect your hearing devices from dirt

Always make sure that your fingers are clean and dry before touching your hearing device. The microphone is extremely small and can become blocked by dust or dirt. You can gently wipe your hearing aids clean at the end of the day to help remove dust and dirt build up.

Keep the devices away from pets

Dogs love to chew and cats think they make an excellent toy, so please keep your devices out of the reach of pets to avoid moisture, dirt, being lost or any potential damage.  If you do tend to remove them during the day then it can be as easy as having a simple container with a lid to keep them in.

Extreme Temperatures

Avoid extreme temperatures

Keep your hearing aids away from direct sunlight and from leaving them where they are exposed to in extremely warm or extremely cold places such as leaving them in a car during the heat of summer or cold of winter.   Extreme temperatures can be in hidden places you don’t think of either, such as using a hair dryer while wearing your hearing aids.

Avoid contact with hairspray or make-up

The fine particles of powder make-up may clog the microphone and other parts of your hearing aid. Hairspray can cover the hearing aids and clog important parts but also make them sticky attracting dirt and dust and cause even further issues.  To be safe, always remove your hearing devices before using body care products.

spare parts for hearing aid

Always carry spare batteries with you

There is no telling when your hearing aid batteries may die so it’s always best to make sure you carry a spare set of batteries so as to not be inconvenienced when out.  It may also be a good idea to carry spare tubes and domes with you.  The parts are very small and can be conveniently carried in a small case.

Don’t use any harsh chemicals

To be fully functional, your hearing devices need to be clean at all times. Clean the devices with a soft, dry cloth. Never use alcohol, solvents or cleaning agents. Special hearing care products for your hearing devices are available at our clinics.

Leave all repairs to the experts

Screwdrivers and oil are the enemy of all hearing devices. If they come in contact with the electronic or micro-mechanical systems, it may lead to irreparable damage. The technology in your hearing device is very sensitive and needs proper handling. See our trained clinicians for any hearing aid repairs or assistance.
