Hyperacusis is a hearing disorder that makes it hard to deal with everyday sounds. You might also hear it called sound or noise sensitivity.

Hyperacusis , a rare hearing disorder (affects 1 in 50 000 people) in which sounds that are perceived as normal are unacceptably loud in both adults and children.

This disorder can occur in one or both ears and is usually accompanied by constant ringing/or buzzing in the ear.

This disorder can come about suddenly (example: from exposure to a single loud gunshot sound) or gradually develop over time.

Majority of people with hyperacusis have normal hearing.

People are usually not born with this disorder as it stems from health issues or certain diseases.

These health issues or diseases include: damage to one or both ears due to the side effects of certain medication, injury to the head, Meniere’s disease, Autism, facial or jaw surgery, migraine headaches, Lyme disease, Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or a viral infection such as Bell’s palsy.

Symptoms of hyperacusis include ear pain, depression, anxiety, difficulty connecting with others, social isolation, avoidance, and sudden discomfort when hearing certain sounds.

The cause of this disorder differs from person to person.

It is known that one of the main causes of hyperacusis is exposure to long term loud noise. For example, constant exposure to machinery

or loud music can lead to noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus or hyperacusis.

Sensitivity to noise can affect your day to day life and wellbeing. Hyperacusis can also be caused due to post-traumatic stress.

For others it can occur for no apparent reason. Although there are may possible causes, there are different ways this disorder can be treated.

Hyperacusis can be managed through various methods such as medication, devices, therapy or surgery.

The first step in Hyperacusis Management is to visit your physician to review your medical history.

Once you have reviewed your medical history with your physician, it is important to schedule an appointment with an Audiologist for a consultation.

Once you have a completed audiological assessment your Audiologist will work with you to recommend the best personalized Hyperacusis Management Plan (HMP) for your hearing health and for you to be HearFIT.
