EAR WAX REMOVAL – EAR WAX CLEANING
BURLINGTON, OAKVILLE, SCARBOROUGH, TORONTO, WHITBY, WOODBRIDGE-VAUGHAN CLINICS
Ear wax is a natural waxy secretion of the glands in our ear canals. Ear wax is meant to help protect the ear from dust, dirt, bugs and other foreign particles. Some individuals produce more ear wax than others; sometimes they produce enough ear wax to block the ear canal and can cause a temporary hearing loss or dimished hearing capabilities. When this occurs, it is important to see our clinicians who can help remove this earwax in both adults and children and are trained in Cerumen removal (earwax).
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING EARWAX CLEANING
We understand no one loves earwax cleaning and having someone digging around in their ear with tools or syringing water to flush out earwax. Our clinicians will ensure you are informed about every step of the proceedure and explain what to expect and what you may hear or feel as not to be startled.
It will also be recommended that 2 to 3 days before your appointment to apply special ear drops which can be purchased at any Hearing Excellence clinic or any store with a pharmacy will offer drops. These drops will help to soften the earwax and make it easier to remove.
HOW EARWAX IS CLEANED OR REMOVED
Our experienced clinicians will evaluate your ear to determine the type of wax, depth in the ear canal and softness of the wax. Depending on these factors they will determine which instruments to use and whether or not to utilize a syringe method. Typically, 2 to 3 days before your appointment it will be recommended that you add special ear drops that will soften the earwax to help make it easier to remove and clean your ear canal. Special instruments, flushing and syringes will be used to remove the wax.
Earwax is curetted with special medical, metal instruments that can cut out and remove the wax. Deeper ear wax is better removed by flushing it with water and removing it with a syringe. It’s a better procedure than the use of metal instruments within close proximity of your ear drum. We realize syringe techniques and flushing the earcanal with water can be uncomfortable for some patients so if needed you will be advised before this procedure is used.
WHY YOU SHOULD NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE EARWAX YOURSELF!
We never recommend the do-it-your-self kits, syringes or even cotton tip cleaners. Without knowledge of your ear’s anatomy you risk causing damage to your ear or ear drum. Use of cotton tip cleaners risks pushing the wax deeper down the ear canal which can cause more blockage of sound and impact your hearing.
